The Death of the Raw Food Diet“Cooked Food is Not a Sin” Uncle Jethro Raw. The raw food diet, as a massive craze that took over the world for over ten years and convinced hundreds of thousands of people — possibly millions — to give up cooking and eat only fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds — is dead, my friends. It died a peaceful death this year. While it’s hard to say when the raw food diet craze officially expired, a good guess would be on April 2. Eastern time. At that time, the last remaining raw food guru who claimed to eat a 1. So he baked a sweet potato, cooked some vegetables, and dipped everything in store- bought hummus. He spent the rest of the evening in a cooked cooked- food bliss, without realizing that along with his 1. To see the letter "W" in your dream is a reiteration of "you". You need to focus on you and only you. To dream of installing wadding into something. The History of the Raw Food Movement. The concept of eating raw food is not new. If we go back to the Ancient world, we’ll find that the Greeks and Romans were ahead of their time in that regard. They innovated in many areas of health, including bathing, sanitation and frugality in eating. Ancient Romans only had a glass of water in the morning, cold meat and fruit for lunch, and a main meal for dinner. Ancient Greeks practiced fasting for health, and apparently even Pythagoras was a vegetarian who fasted for 4. Throughout the ages, the word “vegetarian” was practically synonymous with “high raw diet.”In ancient times, there was no tofu, noodles or other vegetarian- labeled fares. When someone became a vegetarian, it meant that they essentially became a raw foodist eating mostly fruits and vegetables, with perhaps some bread and milk products. So for the most part, a vegetarian WAS a raw foodist. In ancient times, although some men and women were concerned with various methods of physical and mental purification, the idea of raw foodism would have been quite a luxury to most people, except perhaps to the elite of society, such as kings and queens, who could afford getting tropical fruits “imported” from faraway lands. However, royalty usually tended towards excess rather than extreme self- discipline. As a concept, however, the “raw food diet” started around 1. At some point, it was almost bigger and more influential than it is today. Even though it started mainly in Europe, the main instigators were American diet and health “reformists.” Here are a few of the figures that were the most important at the time: Sylvester Graham (1. Graham was one of the most influential early health advocates. Latest Health news and updates. Get the latest diet tips, lifestyle advice and health information from The Sun. A food desert exists when particularly nutritious food is difficult to obtain due to availability, affordability, distance, or limited places to shop in a given area. He was one of the first public figures to advocate vegetarianism and what he called “temperance.” We may remember him as the inventor of the graham cracker, but his contribution was much greater. His followers practiced the brushing of teeth, vegetarianism, sobriety, and eating whole foods (such as whole wheat bread instead of white flour), all practices that we take for granted today, but were very controversial at the time. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (1. You may remember this guy for inventing the “Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.” His initial recipe did not contain all the sugar that the current version has! He was a devout Seventh Day Adventist who advocated a strict, sober, healthy life and fasting, which was called “water cure” at the time. Dr. Emmet Densmore (Main Work Published in 1. The concept of a “fruit- based diet” probably came from Dr. Emmet Densmore, an English doctor who published in 1. The Natural Food of Man.”Densmore was a sick man, and could not find relief to his lingering lumbago problems in a pure vegetarian diet. So he adopted a diet of fruits, nuts, milk, eggs, and cheese. His book mostly contains rather anecdotal evidence on the harm of grain products, and the benefits of a fruit- based, mainly raw diet. Herbert Shelton (1. Shelton became, in his youth, a passionate student of the writings of early health reformists, and proceeded to consolidate all their theories into a unified philosophy he called “Natural Hygiene.” In his thirties, he wrote his giant book “Human Life, Its Philosophy and Laws.”He then operated a health center in Texas where he practiced fasting and a clean, mostly raw food diet. All of the modern Natural Hygiene movement stems from Shelton, although it gained even more popularity when T. C. Fry came along and later, when the book “Fit For for Life” was released in the 1. All serious promoters of Natural Hygiene today are students of Shelton, who wrote more than 5. The Early Raw Food Movement. Between 1. 92. 0 and 1. A lot of books were published during that time, including many recipe books. The press of the time even considered raw foods to be “the latest fad.” However, like many other frivolous pursuits, the movement took a took a huge blow during WWII, when many leaders were sent to the front line and killed in the war. The 7. 0’s saw a renaissance of all health health- related information, including raw foods, through the work of Ann Wigmore, Dr. Fry, Viktoras Kulvinskas, and many others. Ann Wigmore was particularly influential in spreading new ideas such as sprouting, wheatgrass juice and the concept of “living foods.”When the book Fit for Life was published and became a best- seller in the . Most leaders of the current raw food movement were influenced from that book, which in turn came almost entirely from the writings of T. C. Fry, which was the mysterious mentor that Harvey Diamond (one of the co- authors of Fit for Life) talked about in the book. What started in the late . With the spread of the Internet, the raw food diet reached every corner of the world. The Hype of the Late . More raw food restaurants opened and closed during that time than during any other time in history. At some point, when I was publishing my magazine “Just Eat An Apple,” I simply could not keep up with the number of raw food restaurants that were opening and closing across the USA and Canada every month! Now, only a few of those restaurants have survived.“Hype” and “immaturity” are what characterized those last 1. When I joined the movement in California in the late . If you had been a 1. If you could claim to have done it for a decade or longer, you were viewed with a godlike aura. All the gurus were claiming to eat a 1. If you were strong enough to eat a 1. You would hang out with other raw foodists almost exclusively, and try to “spread the word” in a way that dangerously resembled a cult. Ex- raw foodists that who went back to cooked foods or, God forbid — meat — were ostracized from the raw food club and gossiped about. More people tried a 1. Back to Reality: The Party is Over. I will make a claim here, and you can correct me if you think that I’m wrong. I claim that I’m the first raw foodist to have published a book about the “dangers” and “mistakes” of a raw food diet done incorrectly. In 2. 00. 2, I published my book “The Raw Secrets. When I first published it, “The Raw Secrets” became very popular within raw food circles because it was the only book available that told its readers that the raw food diet, when done incorrectly, could lead to health problems. I told my story of eating 1. I did after to find a more balanced and healthy diet and lifestyle. Later, my trademark within the raw food movement was to criticize and question the gurus, even though many people viewed me as one. Years later, I felt that my story hadn’t been fully told, so I wrote my books “Raw Food Controversies” and “Raw Freedom” as my the final nails in my raw food coffin. I was a lone voice in 2. All the Raw Food Gurus Eat Cooked Foods. I will go out on a limb and say that I think that most raw food gurus and advocates eat cooked foods. And I think that most of the remaining gurus who still claim to eat 1. That leaves very few raw food gods who haven’t touched a bite of cooked food since 1. For example, let me tell you a story: A couple of months ago I met with a friend I hadn’t seen for many years. His name is Jay, and he was part of the raw food scene in Montreal about 8 or 9 years ago, when I was quite active there in this underground movement. We talked at length about the raw food scene and how it’s changed. And at some point, we talked about the fact that pretty much ALL of the people who were seriously doing raw foods 1. Jay said, “I’m grateful for this raw food experience. Raw foods are still the backbone of my diet. But I also eat other things now.”This is the case with almost all of the raw food authors, gurus, and serious raw foodists that I knew 1. Back then, they were eating 1. Now, they all eat cooked foods. This includes almost ALL of the authors that who have written books on the topic. I’m willing to entertain the possibility that there could be some exceptions. Some people have maintained a raw food diet for all those years, and say they have never deviated from it. But upon closer look, most of these people were not as 1. But to their credit, they did stick with it for the most part. People Don’t Follow Raw Food Diets Long Term. Yet, some of these people, the 1. Yet, if I went to a raw food conference, organized by a 1. I’m almost certain that if we were to follow the attendees who eat a 1. Eventually. The average time a person will stay vegetarian is 9 years. For raw foodists, my experience leads me to think the percentage of “failures” is much higher, and the time people stay on the diet much shorter. About 9. 5% of the people I knew 1. Ex- Raw Foodists Speak Out. Since I published the Raw Secrets, I just can’t count the number of “ex- raw foodists” that who have come out to share their stories. Now, there are even entire websites dedicated to let ex- raw foodists “come out of the closet,” and leave the raw food “cult” once and for all. Here’s a small sample of former raw foodists you may know: Kevin Gianni — Co- founder of Renegade Health and a modern figure in the movement. There are different types of surgeries, but they all involve dividing the stomach to reduce the amount of food you can consume. Gastric bypass surgery is a major operation and does carry some risks. Following your doctor- ordered pre- op diet helps minimize surgical risk and shorten recovery time, while preparing you for your new post- op way of eating. A common type of bariatric surgery is the Roux- en- Y gastric bypass, or RYGB, which not only reduces the size of your stomach, but limits calorie absorption by bypassing the stomach, duodenum, and upper intestine; your new stomach is connected directly to your small intestine. After surgery, your new stomach may only hold a few tablespoons of food. Over time, your stomach - - also called your . To maintain your weight loss you'll still need regular exercise and healthy eating habits. Most surgeons require a strict diet before surgery. Your doctor may postpone surgery if you don't make the necessary changes. Your diet before surgery also prepares you for your post- op diet, which limits carbs, fat and sugar. If you are allowed to start with a whole foods diet before progressing to a liquids- only diet, you shouldn't drink any alcoholic beverages; you should limit sweets including soda, limit carbohydrates - - especially refined grains and starchy vegetables, choose low- fat rather than full- fat dairy products, limit saturated and trans fats from fried foods and avoid binge eating. If you smoke, you should stop. Your diet should consist of lean meats, seafood, eggs, vegetables, fruit and limited high- fiber grains such as oatmeal. You may need to add a protein supplement to increase your protein intake without adding too many more calories. If you do not completely adhere to the restricted pre- operative diet, inform your doctor right away. Your surgeon may recommend postponing your surgery to reduce any surgical or anesthesia risks.

This term is used today to refer to the providing of healthcare for weight and weight- related conditions, including medical weight management, weight loss surgery, reconstruction after massive weight loss, and other associated treatments. The specialty of bariatrics is becoming increasingly important as the number of obese and overweight persons continues to rise. In this article, the incidence, etiologies, and long- term consequences of obesity are described. The nurse’s role in anticipating obesity- related issues, such as skin, pulmonary, resuscitation, drug absorption, intravenous access, and mobility challenges, are considered. Strategies to address these issues in a size- sensitive manner are presented. Incidence of Obesity.
When obese patients access nursing care, physical size can complicate even the most basic intervention, regardless of practice setting. Overweight and obesity are common health conditions, and the prevalence of these conditions is increasing nationally and globally. Recent estimates suggest that over 6. United States (US) are overweight, as indicated by a body mass index (BMI) higher than 2. Camden, 2. 00. 8). Of all Americans between the ages of 2. US, 1. 0 - 4. 0% are obese (having a BMI greater than 3. BMI greater than 4. Ogden et al., 2. 00. From 1. 97. 6 to 2. US increased from 1. Flegal, Carroll, Ogden, & Johnson, 2. Although differences in obesity rates exist among certain groups, research indicates that some degree of increase has occurred among all groups regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or race (Ogden, Carroll, & Curtin, 2. Worldwide nearly two billion individuals are overweight, equaling the number of individuals suffering from starvation (Buchwald, 2. I am fat and being fat sucks in so many ways. I found that I was an emotional eater who turned to junk food for comfort. Some people who are fat that I know have been. The World Health Organization (WHO) has projected that by 2. WHO: , 2. 00. 8). Although the US is often considered the world’s leader in the number of obese citizens, other countries are not far behind in this regard. Worldwide, 1. 0% of children are either obese or overweight (Yach, Stuckler, & Brownell, 2. In 2. 00. 2, Chinese researchers, who conducted a nation- wide survey of 2. Chinese people were overweight; and they more recently found that over 2. Chinese cities were either clinically overweight or obese (Wang, Kong, Wu, Bai, & Burton, 2. In India, Srinath Reddy, Shah, Varghese, and Ramadoss (2. They predicted that this burden would increase sharply by the year 2. Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes are especially prevalent in urban areas in India, as well as other obesity- related conditions, such as hypertension and dyslipidemia, all of which are currently either undiagnosed, underdiagnosed, or inadequately treated. Nurses will need to adjust their nursing care as the numbers of larger, heavier patients increase over time. When obese patients access nursing care, physical size can complicate even the most basic intervention, regardless of practice setting. Anticipating these issues and developing skills in addressing them will soon become part of the role of every nurse. Assessing Body Mass The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most frequently used and widely accepted tool to measure obesity. Calculating BMI is relatively simple and inexpensive. The Body Mass Index is a mathematical formula based on height and weight, which assigns a number to an individual’s relative risk for morbidity and mortality. This assessment tool is not gender specific. It is the measurement of choice for obesity researchers and has been used extensively by healthcare professionals, including nurses, in recent years. Health organizations and policy makers use the BMI to measure and define obesity and to establish criteria for certain procedures. However, BMI as an assessment tool does carry certain limitations. One problem with using BMI as a measurement tool is that very muscular people may fall into the category of overweight when, in fact, they are very physically fit. Additionally, people who have lost large amounts of muscle mass may be in a healthy BMI category, when in reality they have diminished nutritional reserves. Therefore, the BMI has been most useful in tracking trends in the general population; it must be used in conjunction with other assessment criteria to determine the health status of an individual patient. In 1. 99. 5, WHO recommended using BMI to establish three grades or levels of overweight. Two organizations within the National Institutes of Health (NIH, n. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, concurred with this system, with the caveat that cutoff points are used only as a guide for obesity- level definitions and for comparative purposes across populations over time. This caveat is important because an overweight individual with a BMI of 2. BMI of 3. 0. Health risks, though, do increase gradually as BMI increases. The above organizations have agreed that Classification I corresponds to a BMI 3. Classification II corresponds to 3. Classification III corresponds to a BMI equal to or greater than 4. NIH, n. d. b). Other tools can also be used to measure weight and weight–related conditions. Like BMI, some tools are based on mathematical calculations of the relationship between height and weight, while others are based on measurements of body fat. Some assessment tools establish certain risk factors for co- morbidities, such as the waist- to- hip ratio (Gallagher, Langlois, Spacht, Blackett, & Henn, 2. Studies have suggested that individuals with a high waist- to- hip ratio are at risk for certain cardiac and metabolic disorders, and that the presence of central obesity exacts greater tolls on this segment of the population (Rexrode, 1. The value of using standardized measurements and definitions is that all stakeholders are speaking the same language. Reimbursement, guidelines, and protocols are generally defined by these standardized assessment tools. Etiologies of Obesity. The National Institutes of Health describes obesity as a complex and multifactoral condition. It is often considered a condition of excess energy stores in the form of fat (NIH, 1. Obesity can be related to emotional, environmental, and genetic situations. Nurses often face difficulty in caring for overweight and/or obese patients because of inadequate education and widespread misunderstanding. From an emotional perspective, some authors contend that prejudice and discrimination aimed at larger people fuel emotional issues that lead to a further threat of obesity. The Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity (2. US, where two of three adults and one of two children are overweight or obese. Weight discrimination was reported by 7% of U. S. In the years of 2. Andreyeva, Puhl, & Brownell, 2. Furthermore, in the landmark meta- analysis conducted by Brownell and Puhl (2. Social and economic consequences of this discrimination included social rejection, poor quality of relationships, inferior academic outcomes, and lower socioeconomic status (Puhl & Brownell, 2. This discrimination continues today; failure to ensure empathetic care affects access and quality in the care of complex, high- risk, obese patients (Camden, 2. Nurses often face difficulty in caring for overweight and/or obese patients because of inadequate education and widespread misunderstanding (Camden, Brannan, & Davis, 2. Environmental etiologies of obesity are closely related to nutrition and physical activity (Falkner, Neumarksztainer, & Story, 2. From a nutritional perspective even before the child is born, the mother’s nutrition plays a part in the child’s predisposition toward obesity, as intrauterine over or under nutrition can lead to weight issues. For example, Dutch men who faced “winter hunger” during the first trimester of their in utero life, during the winter of 1. World War II, have frequently become obese as adults (Yajnik, 2. Many people in the US today consume a largely high- fat, low- protein diet taken in the form of large meals and/or snacks that include high sugar, and often supersized drinks. Limited physical activity is due to lifestyle changes often associated with frequent sitting in front of television sets and/or computers, along with labor saving devices that decrease the amount of energy expended to accomplish a given task (Phillippas & Lo, 2. Research has suggested that as more hours are spent with electronic media, the overall BMI among children rises (Davison, Francis, & Birch, 2. Genetic conditions are also thought to play an important role in obesity. Some ethnic groups are predisposed to obesity by what has been described as the “thrifty gene.” This theory, proposed in 1. James Neel, helps to explain why many individuals of Pima descent are overweight. Food provides energy that comes in the form of calories (or kilocalories). All foods provide calories, whether they have a nutrition label or not, and it’s much easier to achieve your weight goals when you know how many. A calorie counter is one of the easiest ways to consistently keep track of your calorie intake. You can use an app on your phone or computer. Even if you don't consistently use a calorie counter, it’s a good idea to try it out for at least a day or two, preferably a typical weekday and a typical weekend day, to know if you're meeting your daily calorie goal. You should also familiarize yourself with the calorie counts of your favorite foods so that you can make smarter in- the- moment decisions. Knowledge is power, after all. Start by reviewing nutrition labels. If you have your phone handy you can easily search for the food. Many calorie counter apps also allow you to scan a food's barcode to easily locate its nutrition facts label. In addition to calories, labels provide valuable information about what's in your food, so it's crucial that you understand how to read them. So how many calories should you be eating? Enter your information into a daily calorie goal calculator to find out, then use a calorie counter to track your food intake and see if you're meeting your goal. How Many Calories Are in Carbs, Proteins, Fats, and Alcohol? Some foods contain more calories than others, and it often depends on the macronutrient content of the food. In general, foods are made up of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, each of which provide a different number of calories: Carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram. Proteins provide 4 calories per gram. Fats provide 9 calories per gram. If you’re drinking alcohol, keep in mind that one gram provides seven calories. After a few drinks, the calories in your favorite alcoholic drinks can really stack up—and that makes sense. Proper portion sizes will provide a balanced amount of calories. Make a few portion size mistakes or eat a meal too high in dietary fat and you may be consuming more calories than you realize. Are All Calories the Same? Understanding Calories vs. Quality of Diet. Does it matter where your calories come from? Is it better to get most of your calories from protein, or eat fewer calories from carbs? Experts have argued on this topic for some time, but the answer is simple: a calorie is just a calorie when it comes to counting the numbers, but the different sources of calories can have different effects on your weight because of factors like satiety and effects on hormones. Bottom line: focus on eating a healthy, balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to get the most benefit. Are Nutrition Facts Labels Accurate?
